Jack Nut = What?
Jack nuts are blind threaded inserts with a brass or steel collar and a slotted cage of spring steel legs. The entire portion is lowered into a clearance hole from the front of the panel, leaving nothing behind.
The collar moves towards the panel face when a machine screw is driven into it. Cage legs behind the panel are dragged forward and bent outward against the back. Flange in front, bent legs behind, panel pinched in between, assembly clamps in a few turns. The threads remain available for further assembly after the screw stops.
Because nothing is distorted by external force-the screw does-it installs in glass-reinforced plastic, brittle castings, thin composite panels, and hollow portions with unreachable back sides.
Where a Jack Nut Fits Better Than the Alternatives
Cage-style blind nuts occupy a specific position in the fastener family, and being honest about it prevents misapplication:
- Versus expandable wall plugs in plastic housings: this insert gives a metal machine thread and a defined clamp, not friction that relaxes with temperature.
- Versus rivet nuts: rivet nuts deform the parent material or themselves under radial force - fine for metal, risky for brittle panels. The cage-style insert clamps gently and is the safer choice for glass-filled plastics and composites.
- Versus through-bolting: no back access needed, and no protruding bolt head behind the panel where space is hollow.
Typical applications include automotive interior trim and lamp housings, HVAC panel fixings, electrical enclosures in thin sheet, appliance assemblies, fiberglass enclosures for outdoor equipment, and electronics housings where a repeated-service thread must survive dozens of open-close cycles.

Materials and Finishes
KEY-CNC produces jack nuts in the combinations that actually get specified:
- Steel cage + brass collar, zinc-plated - the standard industrial combination; robust legs, smooth threads.
- All-steel construction with zinc or nickel plating - for higher-strength joints in metal panels.
- Stainless on request - for outdoor enclosures and wash-down environments.
Plating follows RoHS-compliant trivalent passivation as standard, and every lot passes salt spray and thickness checks before packing. Non-standard flange diameters, leg counts and thread sizes (from M3 upward) are produced to drawing.
FAQ
Jack nuts fit what panel thickness?
Thin panels from 0.5 mm to several millimetres of plastic, plus hollow parts where grip length matters more than panel thickness. We size cage leg length from your stack-up drawing to determine maximum span.
Is it removable after installation?
The screw is removable and reusable. Once its legs fold, the insert provides a permanent fix; removal requires replacement.
Need any specific tools?
No. A regular screwdriver or driver bit and the right screw are enough for installation. For field service and low-volume assembly where rivet tooling is uneconomical, it is chosen.
