Custom Self Clinching Nuts

Custom Self Clinching Nuts
Details:
Clinch fasteners are the sole thread solution that retains panel integrity for sheet metal too thin to tap and too valuable to weld. Unlike weld nuts or rivet nuts, these one-piece fasteners install from one direction through a cold-flow mechanism that embeds the nut head into the panel surface, creating a permanent, flush-mounted load-bearing thread without backup hardware.
Shenzhen Feimoshi Technology Limited (KEY-CNC) manufactures clinch fasteners using CNC stamping and precise shaping, suited to each customer's panel material, thickness, and axial resistance specification. Dimensional tolerances range from ±0.02 to ±0.05 mm spanning M2 to M12 thread

Cold-Flow Installation: Self-Clinching Nuts Fix Thin-Panel Thread Paradox

Sheet metal enclosures below 2 mm thickness require threaded attachment sites for modular construction, however the material cannot support a tapped thread that can withstand modest bolt torque. Direct tapping strips after 2-3 assembly cycles. Heat from weld nuts warps flat panel surfaces and destroys cosmetic coatings. Enclosed chassis prevent rear-side tool access for rivet nuts.
Clinch fasteners address this dilemma with controlled cold-flow installation. The head of the nut has a serrated ring and an undercut groove. Nuts are installed by parallel compressing them into pre-punched holes. Panel material around the hole displaces radially outward and cold-flows into the undercut groove, permanently locking the nut. The serrated ring keeps the panel from spinning during bolt tightening and loosening. The inserted nut is flat with the panel top, causing no protrusion, rear-side footprint, or structural damage.

Two resistances: Push-out and torque-out Clinch Reliability Definition

Clinch Nut Mechanical Endurance Two separate resistance values. Push-out force is the axial force required to push the fastener out of the panel in the direction of installation – the point at which the cold-flowed material breaks free from the undercut groove. Torque-out resistance is the force to rotate the nut in the panel hole . The serrated ring cuts through the panel material .
Both values depend on the panel thickness, hardness and clinch ring shape. Fasteners are designed to offer push-out resistance to a maximum bolt torque standard that corresponds to the application's axial load profile and torque-out values. KEY-CNC clinch nuts have a push-out resistance of more than 150 N and torque-out values of more than 2.5 N·m for M3 thread size on standard steel panels with 1.0 mm thickness and HRB 60 hardness. These values grow linearly with the thickness of the panel and decrease with harder panel materials.

Panel Hardness Matching: Why Material Compatibility Matters for Clinch

Clinch fasteners work best when the panel material is softer than the nut body to allow cold-flow displacement into the undercut groove without cracking. This hardness difference is the most important factor in clinch installation. A panel with a nut that exceeds its rated hardness will not achieve full material displacement, reducing push-out and torque-out values and perhaps fracturing the hole perimeter.

Nut Series

Nut Material

Recommended Panel

Max. Panel Hardness

Typical Application

S (Carbon Steel)

Heat-treated carbon steel

Low-carbon steel, aluminum sheets

HRB 80 / HB 150

Electronic enclosures, appliance housings, automotive panels

CLS (Stainless 300)

300 series stainless steel

Stainless steel panels, mild steel

HRB 70 / HB 125

Corrosive environments, food processing, medical device housings

SP (A286 Alloy)

Age-hardened A286 stainless

Hard stainless steel, high-strength alloys

HRB 90 / HB 185

Automotive frames, marine hardware, chemical processing equipment

S and CLS series install reliably for aluminium panels, KEY-CNC's core CNC machining material, because aluminium hardness (HB 60–95 for 6061-T6) is significantly below either nut series maximum. Before tooling investment, KEY-CNC performs DFM assessment to check hole tolerance, panel temper compatibility, and push-out adequacy for these fasteners and CNC-machined aluminium components like anodized enclosure panels requiring hardware insertion.

Clinch, Weld, Rivet Nuts Decision Matrix

Consider rear-side access, panel finish thermal sensitivity, and product service life assembly-disassembly cycles when choosing a thin-panel thread solution.

Criterion

Clinch Nut

Weld Nut

Rivet Nut

Rear-side access needed

No - single-direction press

Yes - welding from both sides

Yes - mandrel pulls from rear

Thermal impact on panel

None - cold mechanical process

High - heat distortion, burn marks

None - mechanical expansion

Flush surface after install

Yes - head sits flush with panel

No - weld spatter and protrusion

Partial - slight rear bulge

Thread reusability

High - rated for 1000+ cycles

High - if weld integrity holds

Medium - mandrel fatigue limits reuse

Panel distortion risk

Minimal - localized displacement

Significant - warping and discoloration

Moderate - radial expansion stress

Installation speed

Fast - press cycle under 2 seconds

Slow - weld setup and cool-down

Moderate - tool positioning required

Vibration resistance

Excellent - serrated ring locks rotation

Good - if weld quality controlled

Fair - depends on expansion grip

Self-clinching nuts are ideal for enclosed electronic chassis, appliance housings, and modular rack systems with no back access and surface finish integrity. Heavy structural steel panels over 3 mm thick can use weld nuts with strong distortion tolerance. When tubular or closed-profile designs cannot attain gripping force, rivet nuts provide threads on the back.
