A Washer, Spacer, and Bushing in One Part

A standard flat washer spreads the load from a screw head or nut. A top hat washer does that while also creating a defined space between the fastener and the panel. Its raised cylindrical hub passes through or sits within the panel opening, while the flange rests against the surface.

This makes the part useful when a panel needs to sit at a set distance from another component. Common examples include cover panels, trim panels, electronic assemblies, and other applications where a controlled gap is needed around a fastener.

Instead of using a separate washer and spacer, one top hat washer can combine both functions. The required flange size, bore, and hub height can be selected to suit the assembly.

Polymer or Metal: Choosing the Body

The choice depends on the load, temperature, and electrical requirements of the assembly.

A polymer shoulder washer, such as nylon or acetal, provides electrical insulation and helps protect mating surfaces from direct metal contact. It is a practical choice where light weight and isolation matter. For higher loads or temperatures, a metal shoulder washer is usually more suitable.

Metal options include steel, stainless steel, brass, and aluminium. Steel can be zinc- or nickel-plated, while stainless steel suits corrosive environments. Aluminium can be anodized in different colours and finishes.

Installation and Fit Considerations

Installation is straightforward. Fit the hub into the panel opening with the flange seated flat against the surface. Snap-fit or press-fit polymer versions should be installed according to the specified hole and part design.

Before tightening, check the hub length against the actual assembly stack-up. The hub should provide the intended spacing without creating interference with the fastener or mating components.

For polymer versions, avoid excessive tightening, as sustained compression can cause deformation or stress relaxation. Where spacing is critical, use the specified torque and control the hub length and assembly dimensions together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I consider when choosing a top hat washer?

+

-

Start with the fastener size, panel thickness, required spacing, material, and operating environment. The hub length and bore should match the actual assembly stack-up.

Can top hat washers be made to custom dimensions?

+

-

Yes. KEY-CNC can produce custom top hat washers with specified bore diameter, flange diameter, hub height, and overall dimensions. Send a drawing or CAD file for a manufacturability review.

Can you make samples before production?

+

-

Yes. Prototype quantities can be requested for custom parts. This allows the fit and dimensions to be checked before moving to larger production quantities.

What files should I provide for a quotation?

+

-

A STEP, IGES, DWG, or DXF drawing can also be used. Include material, finish, quantity, and any critical dimensions if available.

How do I get a quote for custom top hat washers?

+

-

Send your drawing together with the required material, finish, quantity, and target dimensions. KEY-CNC can review the design and confirm the suitable manufacturing approach.
