
Cam Action: The Geometry of Keeping the Wheels on Your Car
The cam is the heart of any rapid release system. The lever spins over an eccentric pivot, so when it swings from the open position through ~180 ° to fully closed, its pivot point travels away from the axle axis, turning lever travel into axial clamping force on the dropouts. A well built cam has a small movement past the neutral when closed providing an over-center lock to prevent it from being opened by vibration when strong braking and on bad terrain.
Clamping consistency determines wheel retention. Cam geometry determines clamping consistency. The clamping force of ultralight quick release skewers with precision cam action must be predictable from first wheel install to the thousandth. The cam lobe and lever interface is kept smooth to prevent wear which would gradually soften the clamping characteristic over the service life of the skewer.
Axle Construction: Weight-Stiffness Balance
The axle rod transfers the cam's clamping force to the fork legs or frame dropouts, and its material and cross-section determine the skewer's strength and weight:
- The standard choice for durability and predictable rigidity at a modest weight is chrome-moly steel (Cr-Mo). The default for value-oriented and commuter skewers, chromoly axles withstand bending in hard-use and cargo-bike situations.
- Aerospace-grade 7075-T6 aluminium is ideal for racing and weight-sensitive constructions. 7075-T6 has strong yield strength and one-third the density of steel. The axle can be CNC-drilled hollow to conserve grammes without sacrificing stiffness in the important dropout contact zone.
- Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V): Premium performance wheel option. Titanium's corrosion resistance and steel-like strength make it ideal for year-round riding and cyclo-cross, when steel axles would pit.
Standard axle diameter for quick release systems is 9 mm. KEY-CNC manufactures solid and hollow axles to ±0.1 mm critical diameters with CMM inspection. Thread rolling ensures consistent pitch diameter for smooth tension adjustment and longer thread life.
