The Function of a 3-Way Tent Pole Hub
(Not a Sleeve)
Simple tent pole sleeves connect pole sections straight. It works well for straight frames but cannot construct roof peaks, sidewall bends, or vestibule arches. Three-way tent pole hubs do that.
The hub receives three pole ends at specified angles, usually one vertical arm and two horizontal arms or three 120° arms for a tripod shelter. The connector spreads fabric stress over the frame over all three poles instead of concentrating it at one junction. This makes the structure stiffer and less liable to twist in gusts.
The hub is visible and load-bearing, therefore, slight dimensional inaccuracies generate field concerns. A 0.1 mm loose bore rattles the pole and wears the anodised coating. Tight bores make cold-weather assembly difficult when gloves impair dexterity. A ±0.1 mm hub ensures consistent fit for assemblers from the first to the hundredth unit.
Arm Angles, Bore Fit, Centerboss
3-way tent pole hub (arms, bores and centre body). Frame angle is set by arm. Bores, pole ends tight. The central body joins the arms and allows for installation or ventilation.
Mould or machining setup sets arm angles. Ridge-style tents have 90°/90°/180° layouts, tripod or pyramid shelters have 120°/120°/120° and branded frame geometries have unique angles. KEY-CNC mills from solid billet rather than casting, so we can retain these angles within tight tolerances and change them between production runs without new equipment.
The bores are the big ones. The fit needs to be tight enough to prevent rotation under load but slack enough to allow assembly without denting thin wall aluminium tube. A slight chamfer at each bore mouth assists in getting the pole started straight and helps to preserve the anodized surface during set-up and tear-down.
The middle boss normally has a hole for a peak cap, guyline or internal elastic rope. It would take 5-axis machining or very accurate multi-axis fixturing to ensure this hole is concentric with the bores in the arm. Any misalignment at this point will cause the shelter structure to twist when pitched.

Material and Finish Options for Outdoor Use
Key CNC makes tent pole hubs using the same materials as our precision CNC machining services. Choose based on weight, strength, corrosion resistance, and end-user visibility.
- Most camping hubs are 6061-T6 aluminium. It machines cleanly, has a high strength-to-weight ratio, and anodizes for corrosion protection and colour marking.
- Due to its 40% higher strength at the same density, 7075-T6 aluminium is utilised for premium outdoor shelter hardware in ultralight or high-load shelters.
First, we chose finishes for function. Type II anodising adds a 5-20 μm protective oxide layer and accepts black, red, blue, and silver pigments. Type III hard-coat anodising improves rock-abrasion resistance on high-wear hubs by raising oxide depth to 40-60 μm. Sandblasting before anodising hides tooling marks, while polishing gives hardware a glossy, ornamental finish.

Size and Fit Guide
Sizing correctly prevents the two most typical field issues: a loose hub that rattles in the wind and a tight hub that separates the pole end. The following table displays common 3-way tent pole hub dimensions for consumer and light-commercial shelters. Custom sizes are manufactured to order.
Pole wall thickness and predicted temperature range determine bore clearance. Summer heat expands aluminium poles, whereas winter cold contracts them. To account for heat contraction and glove handling, winter or alpine frames may need a slightly looser fit than conventional three-season shelters at 0.05–0.10 mm.
