Chicago Screws: How They Differ From Bolts

The Chicago screw is the answer to the problem of attaching two items firmly, flush and with ease. A standard bolt is drawn down through a hole by a back nut. That works fine for many configurations but the nut sticking up can catch on clothing, collect debris or keep the assembly from resting level.
This two-piece fastener replaces threaded barrels with loose nuts. When the holes in the two panels are aligned, the male screw is threaded into the barrel from the other side. The junction is practically flush with flat or low-profile heads on both ends. The connection is not a spun-on nut, but rather internal threads; thus it can be undone with a single driver and reused without losing clamp load.
This makes the design suitable for circumstances where access to the service, attractiveness or frequent disassembly are more critical than tensile strength. It is a clamping fastener and should be used for panel-to-panel loads and mild mechanical duty, not heavy suspension or safety essential joints.

Each of these fasteners consists of a barrel, a male screw and two heads.
The feminine half is the barrel. It is usually a short cylinder with internal threads and a head. The outside might be smooth or knurled. The knurled barrel digs into softer materials such as leather, plastic or wood to prevent spinning when the screw is tightened. A slick barrel is easy to get in and out.
