For CNC part machining manufacturers, calipers are one of the most essential and common inspection tools. But what if you've finished machining the parts and are completely unaware of how to read, store, and take precautions with the calipers? Shenzhen Huiwen Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Co., Ltd. will now explain in detail. Check if you're using the correct methods.
【Caliper Reading Method】
First, place the machined part on the outer diameter of the part using the calipers.
A. Read the integer part-Look to the left of the vernier zero line and read the value of the nearest graduation line on the scale.
B. Read the decimal part-Look to the right of the vernier zero line and count which graduation line on the scale aligns with the value on the scale. Read the decimal part of the measured dimension (i.e., multiply the vernier reading by the number of the aligned graduation line).
C. Obtain the measured dimension-Add the integer and decimal parts of the two readings together; this is the measured dimension.
【Storage Method】
After use, Huiwen recommends wiping the vernier caliper clean with cotton yarn. When not in use for an extended period, apply grease or machine oil, close the jaws, tighten the locking screws, and place it in its caliper case.
Vernier calipers have four minimum reading values: 0.1 mm (10 divisions on the vernier scale), 0.05 mm (20 divisions on the vernier scale), 0.02 mm (50 divisions on the vernier scale), and 0.01 mm (100 divisions on the vernier scale).
【Precautions】
1. Vernier calipers are precision measuring tools; handle them with care and avoid collisions or drops. Do not use them to measure rough objects to prevent damage to the jaws. Avoid storing them with cutting tools to prevent scratches. When not in use, store them in a dry, neutral place, away from acidic or alkaline substances to prevent corrosion.
2. Before measurement, clean the calipers and check that both measuring faces and cutting edges are straight and undamaged. When the two jaws are tightly closed, there should be no noticeable gap. Simultaneously, the zero marks on the vernier and main scale should be aligned. This process is called zero-point calibration of the vernier calipers.
3. When moving the caliper frame, the movement should be smooth, neither too loose nor too tight, and there should be no wobbling. When securing the frame with the fixing screws, the caliper reading should not change. When moving the frame, it is recommended not to forget to loosen the fixing screws, but also not to loosen them too much to avoid the caliper falling off.
