Longboard / SUP Fin Screw

Longboard / SUP Fin Screw
Details:
Any board with a removable fin system has a fin screw, which locks a fin solidly in a fin box without requiring a driver at the water’s edge. Most current surfboards, paddleboards and foil boards are equipped with an easy-to-assemble tool-free kit of three parts: a screw, a fin nut and a soft rubber O-ring. This hardware has to spin easy, hold tight and laugh off salt, because riders are switching fins on the beach or in the lineup. KEY-CNC builds unique fin screw sets to order, from a single prototype to full production volumes, in alloys that can withstand repeated fresh- and saltwater cycles.

Tool-Free Fin Set Anatomy

Not one but three sections make up a detachable fin set. The fin screw's rounded, flared pull head is hand-spun, so no fin key or screwdriver is needed at the beach. The fin nut is a little block that slides into the fin box slot from below and has a screw thread. A thin rubber O-ring between the heads absorbs the modest tilt of a fin inside its box and prevents the assembly from shaking free under a fierce wave.
Since it sets the fit, component designers tweak that captive fin nut. The stack's threaded boss height and shoulder width determine how far the fin can rock before the screw bottoms out. KEY-CNC makes the screw and fin nut from your drawing, matching thread size, boss length, and pull-head contour, so your Longboard and SUP fin screw set feels consistent on every fin and board.
The rubber O-ring deserves attention. It is not a cosmetic washer; it keeps the joint silent and dampens fin micro-movement under load. Picking the proper shore hardness for that ring is as critical as picking the metal, because too hard transmits vibration and too soft bags out rapidly.

Fin Screw vs. Fin Key vs. Standard Machine Screw

The right fastener hinges on two questions: how often the fin gets swapped, and how much clamp load the board needs. Each setup answers those questions differently:

Fastener Setup

Tool Needed

Clamp Load

Best For

Tool-free fastener + captive fin nut

None (hand pull head)

Moderate

On-water and beach fin changes

Fin key + standard screw

Fin key/driver

Higher

Racing boards needing maximum hold

Machine screw + loose nut

Driver + nut

Moderate

Fixed fins, rarely removed

A fin key with a standard screw can pull down with more torque, which is why some competition boards still favour it, but it forces you to carry a tool and risks dropping a nut into the sand. For the rider who changes fins at the water, a fin screw with a captive fin nut is the better balance of convenience, security, and speed.

Choosing the Right Metal for Freshwater and Saltwater

Fin hardware sits in one of the most corrosive places a metal part can live, so the grade matters far more than the polish. Saltwater attacks pitting-sensitive alloys quickly, while a lake fin rarely sees any of that stress. The table below maps common KEY-CNC grades to the jobs they do best:

Grade

Why It Works for Fin Hardware

Best For

316 / 316L stainless steel

Best pitting resistance; passivated for salt spray

Ocean boards (recommended)

17-4PH stainless steel

High strength, good corrosion resistance, thin sections

High-load and thin fin screws

Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V)

Strong, light, fully corrosion-resistant

Premium surf and foil boards

6061-T6 aluminum

Light and inexpensive, low salt tolerance

Freshwater boards only

C360 brass

Easy to machine, decorative

Freshwater / cosmetic use

For a surfboard or paddleboard that sees ocean water, a 316 grade is the safest default at the high end of the range, with passivation applied to strengthen the oxide layer against salt spray. Aluminum and brass are perfectly reasonable for lake and river boards but will pit in seawater unless they are anodized or PVD coated. KEY-CNC offers plating, anodizing, sandblasting, polishing, powder coating, and PVD, so you can match the finish to the environment and to the look of the board, with batch-to-batch consistency backed by material traceability.
