Lockable Index Plunger

Lockable Index Plunger
Details:
A lockable index plunger not only holds a pin in position, it also holds it out of the way. A normal spring plunger only pulls back when you grip the knob . This design features a second collar that allows you to rotate the knob a quarter turn and lock the pin in the pulled back position leaving the bore free . That one distinction is why it shows up on machines, tooling and inspection fixtures where an operator needs a pin to get out of the way while work is loaded or moved. KEY-CNC produces these parts to order, from one prototype to production runs, in the alloys the application actually needs.

The Lockable Difference: Why Rotate the Knob

Every index plunger shares the same core idea: a spring pushes a hardened pin out, and pulling the knob retracts it against the spring. The lockable variant adds a cam collar between the knob and the body. When the knob is pulled out and rotated about 90 degrees, that collar captures the knob on a detent and keeps the pin retracted without any force from the operator. Rotating it back releases the detent, and the spring drives the pin forward again.

That cam takes the place of a locking nut or set screw you would have to adjust by hand, and it is the reason a lockable design is chosen over a plain one wherever the pin must stay clear repeatedly. The spring, the pin, and the cam all have to work in a tight envelope, so the plunger body is a precision-turned part where the bore, the detent, and the thread are held to the same concentricity.

Lockable vs. Plain Spring Plunger vs. Indexing Pin

The three components often get mixed up, but they solve different problems. The table below maps the decision:

product-2000-400

Part / Setup

Locked Retraction?

Tool Needed

Typical Use

Lockable type

Yes (rotate knob)

None

Repeated clearing of a bore

Plain spring plunger

No (hold to retract)

None

Spring detents, light location

Indexing pin (no spring)

Yes

Lift and swing arm

Positive stop, no spring action

If the operator has to pull the pin back for every cycle, a plain spring plunger is enough. When the pin needs to stay out while a part is positioned, loaded, or clamped, the lockable index plunger is the component that removes a second hand from the job.

Spring Force and Pin Diameter: The Two Numbers That Set the Feel

Two values decide how the plunger behaves in service. The spring force controls how firmly the pin seats into a hole or detent, and the pin diameter determines how much locating accuracy it provides. A stronger spring feels more positive but takes more pull effort and puts more load on the detent; a smaller pin gives finer location but less shear strength.

For a given bore, engineers usually size the pin to the largest diameter that still locates the feature cleanly, then choose a spring that seats the pin without binding. KEY-CNC can adjust the spring rate, pin travel, and detent depth to match the force you want, and will confirm the engagement on a drawing before anything is cut.
