Four-Slot Slotted Round Lock Nuts

Four-Slot Slotted Round Lock Nuts
Details:
Precision-machined cylindrical four-slot slotted round lock nuts have four uniformly spaced radial slots on its outer diameter. These nuts lock spinning shafts, bearing housings, and threaded spindle assemblies using hook spanners or pin wrenches. Four-slot slotted round lock nuts use a tabbed lock washer (DIN 5406 / MB series) whose inner tab engages the shaft keyway and whose outer tab bends into one of the four slots to create a fail-safe mechanical lock that resists vibration-induced loosening. Hex nuts use thread friction alone.
KEY-CNC uses multi-axis CNC turning centres to make these nuts from solid bar material with thread concentricity within 0.03 mm TIR and slot dimensional consistency that mass-produced cold-headed alternatives cannot match.

Torque transfer and slot geometry

Four-slot slotted round lock nuts have a cylindrical body and four equidistant slots. Each slot holds the tab washer and transmits spanner wrench torque. The slot width, depth and wall thickness determines the tension of the nut in tightening before deforming. KEY-CNC CNC-machined slot walls with Ra 1.6 μm or better surface polish, avoids burrs and spanner sliding during tight installation at high torque.
Sizes KM 10 and M50x1.5 are available with four slots and 90 degree angular adjustment resolution. The lock washer tab engages at 4 places each revolution. For situations where finer preload adjustments are needed such as ball-screw bearing preload on precision machinery, this 90 degree increment must be factored into the torque calculation since the nut may need to be slightly over-tightened to align the slot. Thread pitch selection is compared to preload tolerance in KEY-CNC DFM evaluation.

The Difference Between Positive and Friction Locking: Why It Matters

Four-slot slotted round lock nuts are positive mechanical locks. Understanding their involvement in safety-critical assemblies requires distinguishing from friction-based locking methods:

Parameter

Four-Slot Slotted Round Lock Nut (Positive Lock)

Nylon Insert Lock Nut (Friction Lock)

Locking mechanism

Tab washer bent into slot - physical barrier

Nylon ring grips bolt threads - friction

Vibration resistance

Cannot rotate without shearing the tab

Degrades as nylon cold-flows under cyclic load

Temperature limit

300°C (all-metal construction)

100°C (nylon insert softens)

Reusability

Unlimited if slots and tabs are undamaged

Limited - nylon loses grip after 5–10 cycles

This separation of load-bearing and locking duties is why rotating equipment with safety-critical preload retention uses four-slot slotted round lock nuts. Although thermal expansion or embedment relaxation lessen clamp strain, the mechanical lock prevents the nut from backing off the shaft.

Material Selection and Surface Treatment Strategy

Material choice for four-slot slotted round lock nuts depends on the operating environment and the mating shaft material. KEY-CNC offers the following options, each selected through DFM review to ensure compatibility:

Material

Tensile Strength

Surface Treatment

Recommended Environment

45# Carbon Steel

600 MPa (Class 8)

Black oxide + oil

General machinery, gearboxes, shaft assemblies

40Cr Alloy Steel

800 MPa (Class 10)

Phosphating, zinc plating

Heavy equipment, excavator pins, crane slewing rings

304 Stainless (A2)

700 MPa (A2-70)

Passivation (ASTM A967)

Food processing, medical equipment, marine deck hardware

316 Stainless (A4)

800 MPa (A4-80)

Passivation, electropolishing

Offshore, chemical processing, coastal installations

For aluminum shaft assemblies in robotics and drone applications, KEY-CNC can also machine four-slot slotted round lock nuts from 6061-T6 or 7075-T6 aluminum with anodized finishes, eliminating galvanic corrosion concerns when both nut and shaft are from the same electrochemical series. All surface treatments are RoHS-compliant.

Spanner Installation and Engagement Protocol

1. Spin the nut onto the shaft thread until finger-tight against the bearing inner race or component face. Hand-spinning from either direction is fast with the symmetrical round shape, decreasing installation time by 30% over keyed washer systems.
2. Tighten to specification with a hook spanner or pin wrench in the slots. In tight places, KEY-CNC machined nuts' chamfered slot edges enable secure tool contact, preventing spanner slide and knuckle injury.
3. Lock tab washer: Align nearest slot with washer outer tab after obtaining target torque. Punch or screwdriver the tab into the slot. Check sure the shaft keyway holds the inner tab. The nut is mechanically secured and cannot rotate without tearing the tab.

To align slots, field workers often overtighten past design torque. KEY-CNC recommends fine-pitch threads (e.g., M50×1.5) during DFM assessment to mitigate this issue. minimise slot angular distance, allowing alignment with little torque overshoot.

FAQ

Q: What is the standard for four-slot slotted round lock nuts?

A: KEY-CNC is manufactured according to the requirements of DIN 981 (bearing lock nuts), DIN 1804 (slotted spanner nuts), GB/T 812, and ANSI/IFI-167. It also supports custom dimensions to customer drawings.

Q: Can four-slot slotted round lock nuts be reused?

A: Yes, if the slots are not deformed, the thread is within 6H tolerances and the lock washer tabs are intact. For safety essential applications KEY-CNC recommends changing the tab washer after each disassembly cycle.

Q: What is the largest shaft size available?

A: The normal CNC machining range is from M10 to M120 for metric threads. Larger sizes or non-standard pitch DFM assessment can be quoted upon request.

Q: Do you sell the matching lock washers?

A: Yes. KEY-CNC can supply the necessary DIN 5406 (MB series) tab washers machined to the shaft keyway specification enabling you to have a full locking system from one supplier.

Q: How are the nuts wrapped for shipping?

A: Normal packing is individual bagging with label, packing in cartons or wooden case for international shipping by DHL, Fedex or UPS. Most orders are delivered to North America and Europe in 3-7 working days.
