Washer Rectangular Geometry – Engineering Proposal

A square washer is one with an enlarged bearing surface. A round washer has a round footprint which can concentrate stress and create a pull through failure under load. This is particularly the case when the mating material is soft, fibrous or prone to deformation, such as timber, composites, thin gauge sheet metal or insulating board.
Custom CNC Square Washers provide 4 flat sides in the load bearing footprint to enhance the effective bearing area by 27-40% over a round washer of similar inner diameter. This geometrical advantage is useful in a number of situations:

Square washers are used in timber and engineered wood connections to prevent crushing of wood fibre around bolt holes and protect the integrity of the joint under cyclic pressures.
Oversized/slotted hole assemblies: applies to large slots that cannot be fully spanned by round washers.
Composite panels are fastened with diffused clamping pressure to prevent delamination of the boltinterface.
Electrical isolation stacks: increasing surface area improves the insulation between layers of conductors.

Round washers do not tend to rotate when tightening . Flat sides of square washers do . Round washers spin freely when a bolt is torqued, but the squared edges bite the substrate and hold the load where the engineer intended.

CNC Machining versus Stamping: Accuracy for Effectiveness

Most commercial square washers are stamped from coil material, a quick, cheap method that is fine for basic hardware but not for precision assemblies:

Burr formation on stamping edges may lead to unanticipated variations in the washer thickness during secondary deburring.
Clamp-load consistency in bolted joints is influenced by thickness variation of ±0.1 mm or more within a single stamping run.
Remember that standard stamping works best with soft, ductile alloys, therefore not much is available in high strength or unusual materials.
CNC machining eliminates stamping die wear problems such as dimension drift and variance from nominal norms.

Each CNC machined square washer is controlled in every dimension (outer width, inner diameter, thickness, chamfer angle, edge break) by programmable tool paths and validated by CMM inspection. Surface treatment, corrosion protection

Bare metal is rare for long term service. Key-CNC provides in-house material- and application-specific surface treatments:

Anodising (Type II/III) This is a sulphuric acid anodising treatment that provides a durable oxide finish (up to 50µm for Type III hardcoat) on aluminium square washers to prevent abrasion, corrosion and UV damage. Clear, black and custom colours.

Passivation – Citric or nitric acid passivation enhances the natural chromium oxide layer, extending service life in corrosive situations by eliminating free iron from stainless steel surfaces.

Carbon Steel washers are supplied with a black oxide/zinc plating. This provides economical corrosion protection for use inside and in mildly corrosive situations.

Electropolishing results in a flat surface on stainless steel, which decreases friction, improves cleanability, and encourages passive film development.

Powder Coating - For outdoor and industrial washers providing optimal environmental protection.
