Cotter Pin Types & Specifications

Cotter Pins for Secure Locking are available in four standard configurations, each suited to different assembly geometries and retention requirements. Select the type that matches your shaft diameter and access conditions.

Pin Type

Head Style

Recommended Use

Shaft Diameter Range

Standard Split Pin

Single loop, bent legs

General machinery, agriculture, transport

1.6 mm – 16 mm

Hammerlock Cotter Pin

Double-loop, hammer-shaped head

Heavy vehicles, cranes, mining equipment

6 mm – 25 mm

Bow Handle Cotter Pin

Bow-shaped bow top

Marine, offshore, food processing

3 mm – 16 mm

Stub Cotter Pin

Short, blunt legs

Limited clearance, compact assemblies

1.6 mm – 8 mm

Material Note: For Corrosive Environments, specify stainless steel 316L. For cryogenic or high-temperature applications (-200°C to +550°C), specify Inconel or Monel.

Materials & Finishes

The material and surface finish of Cotter Pins for Secure Locking determine corrosion resistance, temperature range, and compatibility with the parent assembly. Select based on operating environment, not cost alone.

Material Grade

Finish Options

Primary Application

Carbon Steel (65Mn)

Zinc Plated / Black Oxide

Heavy machinery, transport, agriculture (indoor/dry)

Stainless Steel 302/304

Passivated / Electropolished

General industrial, commercial equipment, food processing

Stainless Steel 316/316L

Passivated / Electropolished

Marine hardware, medical devices, offshore platforms

Brass (C26000)

Plain / Lacquered

Electrical enclosures, RF shielding, decorative hardware

Inconel / Monel

Plain (high-temp capable)

Petrochemical, cryogenic systems

Finish Tip: For outdoor or high-humidity applications, always specify stainless steel 304 or 316 over zinc-plated carbon steel. The total cost of ownership is lower when corrosion replacement frequency is eliminated.

Selecting the Proper Cotter Pin

Opt for Secure Locking Cotter Pins with five interlocking characteristics. If all five are fixed, field failures will be avoided.

1. Hole diameters matching

Nominal diameter of pin to be 0.8 to 0.9 times diameter of cross-hole. Too small --> no retention Installation damage: too large. All our KEY-CNC orders are supplied with pin to hole ratios.

2. Compatibility of shaft diameter
Pin's bent legs should be spherical, with no gapping of the shaft. ISO 1234 standard covered diameter of pin shaft. KEY-CNC can supply custom leg radii for non-standard shaft sizes.

3. Compatible materials
Pin material must suit the assembling circumstances. Galvanic corrosion is the corrosion of dissimilar metals in a damp or conductive environment. Indicate the grade of stainless steel - marine or medical grade.

4. Operating System Temperature Range
Standard stainless pins are rated at 260°C. Inconel pins, petrochemical and aerospace applications certified to +550 C Carbon steel pins, zinc treated, max. 120 °C.

5. Safety and Regulatory Requirements
In the EU, US and China, cotter pins are specified as key fasteners for transport and lifting equipment, as required by TÜV, DOT and equivalent regulations. Please read the regulations before buying commodities pins.

FAQ

Q: Reuse stripped cotter pins?

A: Secure Locking Cotter Pins restrict load. An overload bends the pin, not the primary fastener or assembly. Straightened and reused pins may fail below rated loads due to fatigue. Replace pins always.

Q: What happens if the castle nut is retorqued after cotter pin installation?

A: Retorquing the nut bends and loads the pin leg, reducing fatigue life. Secure Locking Cotter Pins require nut torque checks.

Q: Nonstandard sizes or materials?

A: Key-CNC makes commercial Cotter Pins for Secure Locking in spring steel, stainless, brass, Inconel, or Monel from 0.8 mm to 25 mm. Non-standard shaft profiles can have unique leg radii for bulk purchases.

Q: Surface finish that prevents maritime corrosion?

A: We propose electropolished stainless steel 316L for marine and offshore applications. Reduce corrosion-accelerating surface micro-roughness with electropolishing. Marine and salt-spray areas should avoid zinc-plated carbon steel.

Q: KEY-CNC cotter pins fulfil what standards?

A: The KEY-CNC Secure Locking Cotter Pins fulfil ISO 1234 (metric) and ASME B18.21.1 (imperial) standards. Custom shaft geometry is available.
