What Is Decorative Anodizing ?

Decorative anodizing is a controlled electrochemical process that creates a translucent, porous coating of aluminium oxide on CNC-machined aluminium surfaces, then combines that layer with colour and permanently seals it. Unlike paint or powder coating which rests on the top of the metal and can chip or peel, ornamental anodizing grows the finish from within the aluminium itself. A beautiful surface is produced, bonded at a molecular level.

Key-CNC Decorative Anodizing Service offers sulphuric acid (Type II) anodizing according to MIL-A-8625 with oxide layers of 5-25 μm thickness. This variety of thicknesses preserves fine CNC machined details like as engraved logos, textured patterns and precise edge geometries, and offers a rich, consistent colour that survives daily handling, UV exposure and moderate environmental damage. The approach may be used for aluminium alloys 6061, 6063, 7075 and 5052. This gives product designers a good choice of materials.

Decorative anodizing produces colour within the oxide structure and not as a film on the surface, therefore the finish is more resistant to fading, scratching and peeling than normal coatings. How We Do It

Key-CNC's Decorative Anodizing Service Key-CNC's decorative anodising service is a strict five-step procedure, all of which are done in-house alongside our CNC machining processes in our Shenzhen facility:

1.Surface Preparation
Each part is degreased and cleaned to remove cutting oils and residues. For matte or satin finishes, controlled bead-blasting or chemical etching is used to standardise the surface texture before the anodising process starts.

2. Anodising by means of electrochemistry
The parts are placed on titanium racks and are immersed into an electrolyte bath of sulfuric acid, temperature regulated at 18 to 22 degrees C. A tightly controlled direct current causes the growth of oxide layers to a desired thickness - typically 10 to 20 µm for decorative purposes.

3. Dyeing Colour
The easily created porous oxide layer can absorb organic colours. Parts are put into heated dye baths under regulated conditions; dwell duration, temperature and dye concentration are adjusted according to colour specification in order to obtain target hue and saturation.

4. Sealing
Hot sealing with nickel-acetate at 90-98°C seals the oxide pores and locks in the dye for maximum corrosion resistance. greater UV stability Dual seal method offered for applications requiring greater UV stability.

5. Quality assurance
Each batch is visually colour matched to authorised reference samples, coating thickness is measured using an eddy current gauge and adherence is tested. For severe outdoor or maritime applications, salt spray testing (ASTM B117) and UV fade resistance tests are available upon request.
