Why CNC, Not Stamped - What the Process Choice Actually Buys You
The choice between a stamped and a CNC machined adjuster shows up in three places that matter on a drawing review, a quality inspection, and a field failure report.

|
Decision Point |
Stamped Tri-Glide (Typical) |
CNC Tri-Glide (KEY-CNC) |
|
Slot width tolerance |
±0.20 mm, varies with die wear |
±0.05 mm, controlled per print |
|
Material options |
Mostly SS304 / SS316 sheet |
SS303 / 304 / 316, Al 6061-T6 / 7075-T6, titanium on request |
|
Corner & edge radius |
Sharp cut edges, secondary deburr |
Programmed radius, single-setup cut |
|
Webbing fit |
Generic slot widths only |
Slot width matched to webbing lot (e.g., 25 mm, 38 mm, 50 mm) |
|
Low-volume economics |
High tooling cost, viable only at scale |
No tooling charge, viable from 50 pcs prototype through mass production |
|
Geometry changes |
New die required |
Edit the G-code, re-cut |
The trade is straightforward: stamping wins on per-piece cost at very high volumes with a fixed geometry. CNC wins on every other variable - material range, dimensional control, prototype speed, and the ability to evolve a part without scrapping tooling.
Tri-Glide Slide Buckle Geometry-Load-Carrying Features
A tri-glide appears straightforward. Two stacked bars, two or three parallel slots, rounded frame. On CNC machines, each feature has a configurable parameter and performs a specified function.

Slot width. This is the most crucial aspect. With space for sliding yet tight enough to lock under load, a 25.4 mm slot fits 1" webbing. KEY-CNC adapts slot width to how much webbing you run, not a catalogue size.
Thickness of bar. The interior bars carry shear load when webbing is side-loaded. In stamped pieces, the die fixes the bar. CNC bars can be thicker for fall protection or lightened for pack straps.
Corner radius. Strap adjusters have sharp corners that cause stress and cuts. CNC machined corner radii (1.5–3 mm) eliminate both and give the product a finished feel.
An outline of the body. Asymmetric, square, rectangular, or rounded-corner. Any shape that fits bar stock can be cut without tooling changes because the outline is cut the same way as the slots.
Surface finish. Mirror-polished, bead-blasted matte, or as-milled. A glossy body slides fairly smoothly during adjustment, but a matte body grips harder once set.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What file or drawing do I need to send for a quote?
A: A 2D drawing with critical dimensions, a STEP or IGES file, or a physical sample to reverse-engineer. KEY-CNC can also start from a sketch or a competitor's part if the original print is no longer available.
Q: Can I order a small batch for prototyping?
A: Yes. CNC machining does not require hard tooling, so single prototypes through low-volume production runs can be supplied without a tooling charge. Mass-production pricing kicks in at the volumes that justify it.
Q: How do you control slot width across a production run?
A: Slot width is checked against the print with digital calipers on first article, and in-process on every batch. Critical features can be moved to CMM verification at the customer's request.
Q: Can KEY-CNC match the buckle finish to the rest of my hardware?
A: Yes. Polished, matte bead-blasted, and anodized finishes are supplied in-house and matched against sample coupons supplied with the RFQ.
Q: Are the materials RoHS and REACH compliant?
A: All stainless and aluminum grades quoted are RoHS-compliant. REACH documentation is available on request for shipments into the EU.
Q: What is the typical lead time?
A: Prototypes typically ship within 7–10 business days after drawing release. Production lead times depend on volume and finish, and are confirmed with every quote.
