Shape Matters: Square & Rectangular Rings vs. Circular Loops

Load-bearing loops are often round-ringed. If the load path is straight and aligned (webbing stitched through, a flat strap sewn in and out, or a rigid tie-down pulled from one direction) then the force is spread over two long parallel sides of the rectangular loop rather than being concentrated at one tangent point on a circular ring. Square Rings differ from Rectangle Rings in their aspect ratio: 

  • Square Rings - same sides. Stylish look for bag hardware, keychain loops and symmetrical lanyard anchors.
  • Rectangle Rings have one longer side. To lie flat for camera sling attachments, harness adjusters, baggage tie-downs, and lifting sling connectors.
  • Both designs with the same wire diameter provide the same load-path advantage over circular rings. The two long sides are under bending pressure; the strap or webbing is flat against the inside corners.

KEY-CNC manufactures square and rectangular rings from 10 to 200 mm long. Wire diameters from 2 to 10 mm. The rings have equal corner radii, which is helpful if you need to use a constant-width webbing for hardware installation.

1. Selecting and straightening wires
Decoiled, mechanically straightened, and cut round wire coils. Material certificates for SUS304, SUS316, brass, and titanium orders are checked upon arrival.

 

2. CNC bending
A multi-axis CNC bender forms two parallel long sides, two short ends, and four corner radii from the cut blank. Since each ring must take the same webbing width, CNC control maintains corner geometry for stitching and assembly.

 

3. Joining

For closed-loop Square and Rectangle Rings, butted ends are bonded using resistance welding (fastest cycle time) or TIG welding (heavy-duty industrial and lifting grades). KEY-CNC's welding fixtures retain the junction flat against the inside face of one long side to avoid interfering with strap slip-through in the finished assembly.

 

4. Finish and check
Rings are polished, plated, or coated. Mirror polish is for fashion and leather hardware, satin for outdoor and industrial. Customer specifications determine plating thickness (0.005 to 0.025 mm for nickel and chrome, PVD for stainless and titanium colour retention). Before packing, each batch is dimension-checked, load-tested on sample rings, and visually inspected.

Q: What is the difference between a square and a rectangle ring ?

A: The Rectangle Ring has a longer side than the Square Ring. Both have the same load-path advantages over round rings for in-line straps and webbing. KEY-CNC draws both shapes on the same machine.

Q: Do square and rectangle rings hold up as well as welded D-rings of the same wire size?

A: Working load limits are same for the same wire diameter, material, and weld technique. The Square and Rectangle Ring weld is on one long side, and KEY-CNC proof-tests each batch at 2x the operating load limit. Always mention the WLL on the drawing and request the test report for safety-critical applications (lifting, climbing, harness anchors).

Q: What material should I choose for marine or outdoor application?

A: SUS316 (or SUS316L for medical and food-contact assemblies). Both resist saltwater pitting corrosion and have more chromium and molybdenum than SUS304. Avoid ornamental PVD finishes for marine immersion; salt accelerates deterioration.

Q: Can KEY-CNC engrave square and rectangle rings with logos?

A: Laser engraving is available on the flat face of the long side of rings with a wire diameter of 3 mm or thicker. The logo is 0.1 to 0.3 mm deep and filled with black oxide or natural, depending on the finish.
