Slotted Toothed Spring Pin

Slotted Toothed Spring Pin
Details:
One-piece, one-time-expansion spiral, coiled, or annular spring pins have a longitudinal slot cut along their shank and finely shaped teeth on their outer surface. When driven into a hole slightly smaller than the pin's free outer diameter, the slot closes and the teeth compress inward, regulating radial pressure against the bore wall.
In interference fit, compression force locks axially and tooth form bites into host material locks rotationally. Dual-locking Slotted Toothed Spring Pins resist vibration, cyclic stress, and torque reversal, which affect clearance-fit pins.
Key-CNC CNC manufactures Slotted Toothed Spring Pins from high-grade spring steel (SAE 1095 or equivalent) or 300-series stainless steel, then hardens and tempers them to the precise spring constant needed for consistent expansion behaviour throughout time. See our precision hardware at www.key-cnc.com for bespoke diameters from 1.0 to 12.0 mm.

How Tooth Geometry Creates Self-Locking Interference Fit

Engineering geometry makes Slotted Toothed Spring Pins operate better than conventional spring pins. Understanding the locking mechanism helps engineers choose and avoid costly field failures.

The 3-Step Insertion Process

[01] Pre-Insertion (Free State)-The pin's OD_free is purposely greater than the hole diameter. Depending on interference grade, OD_free is 3–8% above D_hole.
[02]Driving (Compression State) narrows the slot and flattens the tooth crests as the pin enters. A pin exerts radially outward force F_r = k · ΔD, where k is the axial spring constant and ΔD is diametric interference. This pressure causes primary interference-lock.
[03]The tooth flanks, cut at an oblique angle to the pin axis, wedge against the bore surface when fully seated. Any attempt to rotate the pin creates a positive rotational lock due to the tooth pitch angle's wedging force (usually 30°–45°).

The result: a pin that will not walk out under axial vibration and cannot spin under torque without obvious damage, indicating joint integrity visually and mechanically.

Quick Selection Tree

◆ Diameter ≤ 3 mm: Light-duty: electronics, sensors, optomechanics (Recommend: 302 SS for corrosion sensitivity)

◆ Diameter 3–6 mm: Medium-duty: industrial gearboxes, automotive interiors, robotics (Recommend: 1095 spring steel, Zn-Ni plated)

◆ Diameter 6–10 mm: Heavy-duty: agricultural machinery, construction equipment, marine hardware (Recommend: 316L SS or hard chrome spring steel)

◆ Diameter > 10 mm: Extra heavy-duty: hydraulic equipment, off-road vehicles, industrial presses (Consult Key-CNC engineering for custom material & heat treatment)

Industries Use Slotted Toothed Spring Pins

  • For automotive transmissions and gearboxes, these pins serve as input/output shaft locators and synchronizer detents. Vibration resistance prevents pin wander, a major gear misalignment and noise cause. Usually 4–8 mm spring steel with Zn-Ni coating.
  • Power tools and industrial equipment include armature stop pins, planetary gear carriers, and pivot bearings in gearheads. The pin's dual retention system reduces part count and assembly time by eliminating extra e-clips and set screws.
  • Robotics and Precision Motion Systems: Servo joint pivot pins, encoder shaft locks, and linear actuator anti-rotation pins. Positional precision over thousands of duty cycles requires consistent insertion force and interference fit.
  • In outdoor and agricultural machinery, hinge pins are used for heavy equipment door panels, PTO lever pivots, and linkage connectors in tractors and harvesters. Dirt, moisture, and shock loading require stainless steel or corrosion-plated versions.
  • Consumer Electronics & Appliances: Fan motor shafts, laptop lid (and monitor stand) hinge pins, and detachable panel fasteners. Hardware is often small (1.0–3.0 mm) and aesthetics and polish key.

Custom OEM Solutions - Slotted Toothed Spring Pins to Your Specification

Key-CNC has delivered over 1,200 custom fastener part numbers since 2008. Our engineering team works directly with your design engineers to optimize the pin geometry for your specific assembly constraints. Common OEM customization dimensions:

• Non-standard outer diameter or interference grade for oversized/subsize holes

• Extended lengths up to 100 mm for deep-tube applications

• Enlarged or reduced slot width to tune insertion force

• Diamond-cut or knurled outer surface instead of teeth (for soft host materials like aluminum or plastic)

• Through-hole configuration: axial hole drilled through the pin body for wiring or fluid passage

• Left-hand tooth geometry for reverse-rotation applications

• Pre-installed with a flat washer or E-clip for axial-only (non-rotational) retention

• Custom packaging: individual poly bags, labeled trays, or kitted sets with assembly drawings

Submit your CAD model or technical drawing to info@feimoshitech.com. Key-CNC engineers respond with a free DFM report and quotation within 24–48 hours. Prototype samples are available within 7–10 business days.
