Nord-Lock Type Wedge Lock Washers

Nord-Lock Type Wedge Lock Washers
Details:
Wedge lock washers are unique. It is a matching pair of hardened washers with radial cams on one side and serrations on the other. They prevent loosening by geometry instead of friction like a spring washer. The cam angle is steeper than the thread pitch angle, thus rotation towards loosening rides up a ramp that tightens the joint.
Wedge lock washers secure joints with strain, not friction. Because lubrication, temperature, and coating rarely modify it, nylon patches soften and thread-locking fluid fails under constant vibration, heat cycling, and dynamic strain. Since Nord-Lock launched the cam pair, the washer is known as that.

What Holds Wedge Lock Pairs When Friction Fails

Simple two-step visualisation of the mechanism. As tightened, outside serrations bite into the nut or bolt head and the clamped surface. Places washers and prevents spinning. Rotation occurs only across the cams where the washers meet.
The second level is clever. The cam angle is larger than the thread pitch angle, therefore the fastener can only rotate loose by climbing the cams, which drives the washers apart more than the thread permits. That gap stresses the bolt. Each loosening effort increases clamping force.
This is why wedge lock washers operate as joints age and lock with tension rather than friction. Surface conditions change with heat, oil, and time for friction locks-split washers, serrated washers, nylon patches. Nothing softens angles.

Upper washer

Serrations out, cams in

Locks to the nut or bolt head

A burr stops it from seating

Lower washer

Serrations out, cams in

Locks to the clamped surface

Paint or a proud edge lifts it

Inside, cam to cam

Turns loosening into extra preload

Reversed or separated, so no wedge

Serration faces

Stops both washers turning

Too soft, so the teeth deform

Keeps orientation in handling

Broken, so one half is lost

Pair anatomy: Cam in, Serration out

Even though they look alike, the set's washers are used differently. The assembly decides which faces meet: cams within, against each other; serrations outside, against the nut or bolt head and secured portion.
One wedge lock washer has no wedge effect. It acts like a serrated washer without tension feedback when fitted alone. The pair is connected with a little glue dot at the manufacturer so it cannot be separated in a parts bin or on site.
Two configurations cover most joints. Standard pairs fit regular clearance holes, while enlarged-outer-diameter pairs share the load on slotted or larger holes or soft clamped material. To provide the serrations a complete bite, the bigger version is usually run with a flanged nut or bolt.

Cam-to-Cam: Installation Rules That Decide the Result

Almost every field failure traces back to how the pair was fitted rather than how it was made. Six rules cover it.

Keep the pair bonded. Fit it cam face to cam face exactly as supplied; a separated pair has no wedge effect.

Serrations face outward, against the nut or bolt head and against the clamped surface.

Seat the pair on clean, flat, burr-free faces; paint ridges and chips stop the teeth from biting.

Torque to the specified preload first. The wedge multiplies preload; it does not create it.

On a slotted or oversized hole, use the enlarged-outer-diameter pair with a flanged nut or bolt.

Reuse the pair together on rework; never one half of one set with one half of another.
