Hard anodized aluminum service is a high-performance surface strengthening solution we offer to address extreme wear and harsh environments. This process is carried out under special conditions of low temperature and high current density, and can generate a super-hard oxide film with a thickness of 50-100 microns or even thicker on the surface of CNC aluminum parts. Its surface hardness can rival that of hard chromium coating (HV400-600), greatly enhancing the wear resistance, scratch resistance and corrosion resistance of the parts. At the same time, it has excellent insulation and heat insulation properties. This treatment is particularly suitable for hydraulic system components, high-strength gears, aerospace fasteners, robot end effectors, and mechanical parts that require frequent sliding contact. It is the ultimate choice when functionality and durability are the top priorities.

The core difference between ordinary oxidation and hard oxidation: Select the appropriate protection level for aluminum parts

Among the surface treatment technologies for aluminium and its alloys, anodizing is the most classic and crucial process. However, although "common oxidation" and "hard oxidation" are of the same origin in the industry, they have significant differences in performance and application. Understanding these differences is the foundation for engineers and purchasers to select the correct protection solution for products.

The difference between the process principle and the objective for hard anodized aluminum service:
Fundamentally, the difference between the two stems from the setting of process parameters.
Ordinary oxidation (Type II) is usually carried out at room temperature (about 20℃) and at a relatively low current density. Its main objective is to generate an oxide film that serves both as decoration and basic protection. This film is uniform and dense, but relatively thin (usually between 5 and 20 microns), and can be easily dyed later to obtain rich colors.

Hard oxidation (Type III, Hardcoat) is completed under harsh conditions of low temperature (close to 0℃) and high current density. Its core objective is to enhance performance, pursuing ultimate hardness, thickness and wear resistance. The alumina ceramic layer generated during this process can be over 25 to 100 microns thick and is extremely firmly bonded to the substrate.

FAQ for Hard anodized aluminum service

Q1: How thick is the hard oxide film exactly? Will it affect the tolerance of precision parts?

A: The thickness of the hard oxide film is usually between 25 and 100μm and can be precisely controlled according to requirements. This will inevitably lead to a significant increase in size (the increase is approximately 50% of the film thickness), and there is a certain distribution gradient in the film thickness. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly define the hard anodizing requirements before precision CNC machining, so that we can provide professional "pre-anodizing" processing size suggestions for your drawings and ensure that the final product dimensions are qualified.

Q2: Can hard anodizing be made black or other colors?

A: The hard anodizing process usually does not involve dyeing. Its own color depends on the composition of the aluminum alloy and the process, often presenting as dark gray, grayish green or brownish black. Due to the dense and thick film layer, it is difficult to achieve uniform dyeing as in standard oxidation. If a specific color is required, it is usually recommended to carry out spraying after hard oxidation.

Q3: Will the thermal conductivity of parts deteriorate after hard oxidation?

A: Yes. Alumina is an excellent insulating material. The thick hard oxide film will to some extent hinder the heat dissipation of the aluminum substrate. For key heat dissipation components, this factor needs to be taken into account during the design process, or local oxidation should be adopted to protect the critical contact surfaces.

Q4: Hard oxide layer insulation. What should I do if my parts need to conduct electricity?

A: We offer precise local shielding oxidation services. You can apply a special insulating protective adhesive to the conductive area you specify (such as the inner wall of the threaded hole, the electrical contact surface), and remove it after oxidation to retain the metal conductivity of that area.

Q5: Are hard oxidation and "micro-arc oxidation" the same thing?

A: No. Although both generate thick ceramic oxide layers, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) generates plasma reactions on the surface through high-voltage discharge, resulting in thicker, more wear-resistant films with slightly different bonding forces. However, the surface is rougher and the cost is also higher. Hard oxidation is a more mature and widely applied industrial solution.
